Focus stacking: Changing focus vs. Macro Rail

I'm planning to try my hand at focus stacking sometime soon. I've read about two different methods: Simply mounting the camera on a tripod and changing the focus point from front to back in stages, and using a macro rail (I've ordered a Sunwayfoto MFR-150S) to move the camera closer to the subject.

I'm having difficulty wrapping my head around the difference between the two approaches, particularly in regard to which method gives the best results. In case it makes any difference, I plan to use a combination of Lightroom and Photoshop (latest versions of each) for post-processing.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Larry
