If I shoot on 'TV' mode and set a faster shutter speed it just takes under exposed shots the whole time.
It is fine outside in natural light just seems to be indoors despite lights being turned on and plenty of light in the room.
Our eyes are extremely good at adapting rapidly to different lighting situations and what appears to you to be a well lit room is seen very differently by the camera.
You will almost always need flash or some additional lighting for indoor photography and if you cannot get decent exposures when using TV at 1/60 or 1/125 then your flash isn't powerful enough. Built in camera flashes are very weak and only suitable for fill in flash as a secondary light source in close situations or in small rooms where you get light reflecting from the walls and ceiling.
For large rooms or group photos you will need an external more powerful flashgun. It is unlikely that there is anything wrong with your camera, you are probably expecting too much from it.
