I don't deal with these photo-hosting services, but couldn't their problem be that local personal storage is so cheap and reliable why would anyone need these services? Or what am I missing?

Probably sharing, which I have no interest in.

You may be right on cheap local storage. For many people, jpeg casuals, 1 Tb will last a lifetime. Even with couple of backups, it is peanuts these days.

Sharing was useful, being able to see what other people were doing was good and it also doubled as an off-site backup for me.  Unfortunately they went through with the deferred price rise that Yahoo enacted, the price rose sharply for me (pretty much doubled) and I decided to ditch the paid subscription (which i'd previously happily paid for over a decade) and store my stuff elsewhere in the cloud for less money.
