This is a great suggestion. They should similar rendering and I already live, plus, 135 is a very cheap FL.

Is any particular model or age considered the best

There's basically two types of these lenses optically for f/2.8.

First is Nikkor-Q and early transitional "K" models - 4 elements in 4 groups (the same Ernostar-ish design as E 100/2.8 have).

Second is late transitional "K" (serial numbers 730001 and up), AI and AI-S models - 5 elements in 4 groups (third element replaced with cemented doublet).

I would consider buying late K, AI or AI-S version as they are a bit sharper and have better coatings while having the same rendering as earlier 4-element versions. They are not exactly cheap though - around $170-200. Q version can be had for half that money, and it's not that bad either.

For f/3.5 there are also two types - Q and K (all of them) have 4 elements in 3 groups (kinda like simplified 105/2.5), AI and AI-S have 4 elements in 4 groups. Have no idea about current pricing, unfortunately - probably around $80-120 for AI/AI-S, but that's just a guess.
