Well, one could just as easily say that Canon (and Nikon) are choosing to screw their users by not opening their mirrorless mounts to 3rd party support. Sony opened their E-mount to 3rd party lens suppliers back in 2011, which is why there's such a huge selection of 3rd party lenses for E-mount today.

So if Sony doesn't provide something (or even when they do), you can always turn to a 3rd party alternative if you want to. Ultimately, I think the more open a standard, the more likely it will survive and flourish because there's a stronger ecosystem supporting it. That's good for the system and for consumers.
