I think you just answered your own question, as most people want the L over the non-L for just those reasons. Optically, there is almost no difference.

My only worry is that some users suggests the lens' AF performance is noisy and slow. I enjoy the Eye-AF of the R for portraiture, so will that be an issue and could you suggest alternatives?

I've never noticed the AF as being particularly noisy on my 100mm (non-L), but I don't have many other lenses to compare it to. I have a 6D, so I don't know how this lens would work with Eye-AF if your subject is moving very fast. The AF is not as fast as most primes, because of all the internal glass that has to move to focus. There is a limit switch that helps speed AF up when not using it for close work.
