Z50 in AF-C mode constantly going crazy

I just got a Z50, coming from a D7200. I'm screwing around with settings I use to shoot small birds, which I've always used AF-C. I'm used to AF-C changing focus if the subject moves, but with the Z50 it just won't shut up. With single point mode it's the "best" but still moves a lot, and I'm just focusing on a branch, so nothing moving. Lens is Sigma 50-500 with FTZ, light is overcast. The focus clicks so much I'm concerned it's going to dramatically reduce the life of it, or at the very least, kill the battery quickly.
