Do Smart Collections slow down LR

I'm wondering because I've started using them on a Collection-set level (I create a collection set for each shoot, and then collections within that for specific tasks).

BAsically I use the smart collection (within a collection set) to filter out images I've finished editing, Images I need to edit (my picks/5-stars).  I don't import a ton of stuff (maybe a new shoot every week but usually no more than a few hundred photos--which ends up being far less once culling is done--maybe 100) but I"m just wondering about the longer-term impact when you start using a lot of them and your catalog  gets larger (like 20,000+ photos).

I know LR is slower in general the more you add, but do the smart collections add considerable overhead to the catalog, since they pretty much update instantaneously?
