Avian photography in Costa Rica

I have a 12 day trip planned to Costa Rica intending on photographing birds.  I normally shoot a 1DX with a Canon 500mm f/4.5.  The great majority of the time I don't use a tripod or monopod but I am worried about the low light in the rainforest.  I would prefer not to lug the tripod around and could take a monopod, but it would kill me to miss shots or boost the ISO too high.  What do you folks think and thanks for your thoughts.
