Sony RX10 IV, Speed Light Godox 685s question

I am looking for some advice on using a speed light to deal with lowlight conditions outside. I photograph a lot of birds and sometimes even in my yard, it is too dark for this camera. Someone on a Facebook group posted some images of backyard birds on a dark day using a sony a6000 and 600mm lens with a speed light. The results were absolutely amazing. Anyway, folks have recommended the Godox 685s. But I have some unanswered questions and this would be my first time using a speed light.

I was under the impression these lights only work up to 105mm but the 685s works up to 200mm, is this correct? I'm assuming the subjects need to be fairly close for these lights to be useful? So if shooting outside to a distance, this light would be ineffective but at closer range, it would be helpful?

Any suggestions, sample images would be most appreciated. While I love this camera in ideal light, it is absolutely awful in lowlight and ISO above 100. Would this light make a difference?

Thanks,

Nancy
