I've no battery grip but my X-T2 sleeps after a while and seems to use no battery when asleep. Does it not do the same for the battery grip?

It still takes some time for the camera to wake up after the full sleep, plus you need to press and hold the shutter for 1 second to wake it. In reality it takes roughly the same or even longer time this way. Annoyingly you need to wait to check if the camera woke up or if you your 1 second press was too long enough to wake it up. So it is quite easy to miss some of your shots when you are in hurry.

Some shooters actually prefer to learn the technique of manually turning the camera off when not needed and on when they raise it to eyes. Turning the proximity sensor off also helps. Allegedly it's a fastest and the most consistent way for not missing the first shot.
