A6500, LA-EA3 autofocus hunting in movies

I had a search but haven't found much on the subject.

When recording a movie with an A6500 + LA-EA3 I found the auto focus won't work unless the shutter is pressed half way (no big issue, talked about elsewhere on here.) However, when I half press the shutter button the auto focus is continually cycling/hunting back and forth by a large margin either side of the correct focal point. So it cycles severely out of focus, passes the focal point, severely out of focus in an endless cycle. It doesn't actually stop/ pause at all when it passes the correct point.

That's using a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 lens. In photo mode (no other changes) it focuses perfectly. Both camera and LA-EA3 have the latest firmware.
