Trying out two old, used Pentax SLR's

Cameras: PZ-1 and PZ-70

Tried them out with fresh 2CR5 battery and Pentax F 28-105 and 35-70 lenses.

Question: Must film be loaded in camera to test AF / Flash / Basic Functions?

Aperture ring set to A.

Seems like AF not working. Cameras are configured to AF mode according to manuals.

No AF response from half-press of shutter. (Both)

PZ-70's flash DID fire, in P Mode, but only once. Heard auto film advance motor whirring I think.

Film icon blinking on PZ-70's status screen, hence my question.

Side note, PZ-1 seems like the more solid camera, but older.
