why don't nice primes focus as quickly as the "workhorse" zooms?

i have the 105 f/1.4, and i'm eyeballing the 70-200 fl lens.  i'm going through the typical pros/cons mental gymnastics. one thing that bugs me is... why doesn't nikon put similar auto-focus systems into their primes as they do with their zooms?

i've been shooting sports with the 105, and i get results that are very different from the zoom shooters.  i love it, BUT it's a handful at times to get the shots with it when i'm told the 70-200 is a monster at getting & keeping focus.

is it merely nikon anticipating usage patterns that determine af systems?  i'd love the 105 to focus as quickly as the sports zooms.  would that even be possible?  i guess it may be an engineering feat if the optical elements are grouped and connected to the af system differently.
