D800E "clack" and D810 with Sigma 100-300 both fail my needs - What next?

I've never been happy with the CLACK of my D800E, and this was justified after a client complaint at a wedding (disturbed the ceremony)
So I've just bought a D810. Zero difference in quality or performance, just a nicely dampened shutter. So I was happy.....until.....
Just tried it with my favorite all time zoom lens, the Sigma 100-300mm f4 - only to discover evil obsolescence has rendered it a manual focus lens on the D810
Really, really, well and truly getting the hump with all the manufacturers right now
So, what to do? Maybe the DF? Or do I have to go back a decade to when I was happy with a D700?
Any suggestions welcome. Especially if you have experience using the Sigma 100-300 f4 with any other FX Nikon, even maybe a mirrorless?
