Question regarding use of IS when using Canon lens on A7rii

For the last 2 years I've enjoyed using my Canon lenses on my A7rii via the Sigma MC-11.  I always read that when you use a Canon lens with IS, you're supposed to activate & use the IS on the lens and turn off the IBIS on the A7rii. This has worked fine, but something happened yesterday that has me baffled.  I was using the Canon 300mm f4 with activated IS when the IS on the lens made a whirring sound (which it sometimes does). I was in a quiet setting so I turned the IS on the lens off. I then activated the IBIS on the Sony. To my surprise, this combination (IS on Canon lens off / IBIS on Sony on) worked perfectly.  After reading a handful of articles saying this combination doesn't work, I'm confused (but pleased) that it works so well. Is this just a fluke, or have I interpreted these articles incorrectly?
