Geotagging

I upgraded from a M3 to M6mII. One of the primary reasons is to use for aerial photography using a custom hexacopter. I was under the impression that the hot shoe mounted GPS units would geotag images, but I guess that's not the case, the only solution is to use the Canon Connect app. It's not really a deal breaker as I would prefer using the GPS from my flight controller, which is tied to an RTK correction system, but it does make for an extra step when shooting for mapping.

I read somewhere that the GP-E2 had the ability to post-process EXIF data to insert geotags. Has anyone tried this and if so can you please explain the process? Does the GP-E2 log data in a readable format such as coma/tab/space delimited text? Just thinking that if I could use the Canon software but reformat my flight controller's output to match it would make it much simpler (or at least cheaper than going with a service).
