I've just bought this lens after being very happy with the 15-45mm that came with the camera. Today we went out to New Brighton where we have been before when testing new equipment out, and I feel it hasn't performed very well compared to the 14-45mm. It was a very dull day I must admit, but I felt disappointed with what I took. They weren't very sharp even after editing in DPP. I am hoping it is a one off as I wasn't too well in any case. I used the 15.45mm inside in a museum and found it very sharp.
Any help on this would be appreciated; also opinions on the 28mm macro lens which I have had my eye one. After today the temptation to trade it in for the macro is quite big :-O. Hoping it is just me having an off day and not found out yet this lens' strengths and weaknesses.
FWIW, my copy of this lens back focuses in Aperture mode. I have to put it in program mode to get sharp pics.
I'm not sure what you mean, do you mean back button focus? From what I have read and seen in the settings this can't be done; but if I have missed something do let me know, as I use back button focus on my 200D. Additionally; are you saying putting it in program mode gives you the sharpest photos?
For some unknown reason, on my copy, the focus is slightly off when it’s in aperture mode, and it focuses further out than the object I’m focused on. So if I’m focusing on a deer, the grass behind the deer will be really sharp and the deer will be slightly blurry (or soft-focused). This doesn’t happen in program mode. The object I’m focused on is nice and sharp.
Since most of the shots I’m taking with this lens don’t need a wide-open aperture or specific fast or slow shutter, program mode works fine for me, and I can always shift to the aperture or shutter speed I want if I need to do so.
Thank you for this. I have had this too and thought it was just me not doing something right; even though never had this problem with other cameras. It’s fine with Tv (I think) and also manual. I will try it in P mode as it does make sense what you have said.
