Here in Switzerland we had a variety with cow fur on the outside. Everybody had them.

Oh yes, you're probably talking about the famous "Fellaff", the Swiss Army tornister (backpack).

For the English language audience: 'Fell = fur, 'Aff' (pronounced 'Uff') is short for 'Affe' = monkey'.

Only recently there has been a come-back. I guess the hipsters have kids in school now.

Actually I have already seen one of these modern ones not too long ago, just the brown colour variety. A little pic from the web:

Interesting about the colours: Back in the 50s, all the cows here in this part of Germany were of brown or brown/white colour; it took crossing the river into Luxembourg where they were all black/white or completely black. I guess they just wanted to be different, compared to the 'evil Krauts' (they say 'Prussians') on the other side.

Btw, most Swiss cows come in Milka colour, right?

What I've learnt from looking up 'Tornister' and so far didn't know: Still in 1940, even Adolf's Wehrmacht had such a fur model, the old 'Tornister M34'. But a much simpler thing, compared to the nice Swiss one:

P.S.: Henry, I really hope you don't mind making your thread with your good pictures look like a 'Ranzen/Tornister/fur thread'!
