"How is that some folks can take a camera (any camera for that matter) - and in this particular case, the M50 - and wind up capturing superb results? And on the other hand, how is it that for some others, they look at the same camera and wind up with horrible results Is it the camera, or is it the user? I venture to say, that in most cases, it's the user."

Enough said...

Over on the M43 boards, there is one user who had bought an expensive telephoto lens. He could not coax a decent photo out of it. He returned it as defective, and ended up replacing it several times. He still could not get a good shot out of it, and proclaimed loudly and frequently that it was an overpriced, heavy, poorly made, piece of garbage, and that the lower priced, consumer grade long zoom (with less reach), was a better product. He then posted photos from that lens, which were terrible also, but which he seemed to think were superior to the shots from the longer, more expensive, lens (they weren't).

No matter how much those of us with that lens (who had gotten great results with it, and posted examples, and along with those examples, hints and tips about using it to get those results) tried, we could not make a dent in either how he used the lens or his attitude.

User error.....And I had a good laugh AT MYSELF when I came across my own personal version of it: Early reviewers noted that Panasonic's GX8 seemed to have significant shutter shock at certain speeds when not using the electronic shutter. So, everyone went into a panic about that. I even did not buy the camera initially because of that....

However, some months after it came out, I decided to take a chance on it, and figured I could use the e-shutter for pretty much everything I needed. Still, once I got the camera, I did a few test shots with the regular shutter, and thought it might have some SS...but it was a halfhearted effort on my part.

Well, a few months later, I was shooting with a long lens, and needed to use the regular shutter. Surprise, surprise! There was BLUR! OMG! Shutter shock!!! AGHHH! Then I took a look at the EXIF info....and it turned out that there was no way that blur was from SS, as the shutter speeds were quite far out of SS range...what it was was POOR HOLDING TECHNIQUE on my part. OH. Yeah. Long lens, technique matters, oops.

I did some tests after that, and guess what? What I was seeing was NOT shutter shock, but was a result of how I was handling the lens, as both the regular shutter AND the e-shutter had exactly the same amount and type of blur under the same conditions (ergo no SS as cause....).

Moral of the story: It's really easy to blame the gear first, and the user second, when it really should be the other way around....
