I often use a full size speedlight at 1/64 power to trigger studio strobes. When you turn the head away from the subject it doesn’t influence the exposure.

If you don’t want to use a large speedlight, the SB-300 is the smallest Nikon speedlight. Another small option is the Godox TT350 or any other speedlight, that has a tilt head and can be set to manual - either on the flash or in the camera menu.

If you’re worried that any stray light from the upward pointing flash reaches the subject, mount a piece of cardboard with a rubberband in front of the flash.

Triggering optically is often easier than rigging radio triggers if you use all kinds of flashes.
