I don't know much about the Sigma lens but have the Canon lens.  It is terrific lens, focuses very well for sports, and is pretty sharp at 2.8  Two key advantages over the Sigma lens

  • range - I think you will find times when the zoom is very helpful.  I looked at the focal length distribution of my use and found it clustered at the low end and the high end, but with a surprising number of shots all through the range.
  • IS - when I looked at the Sigma I didn't see that it had IS.  For fast moving sports that is not of much help, but I find that I take as many still shots as I do fast moving and the IS is very helpful for hand holding.
