E-M1.2 - What is this awful jpeg???

I made this photo at sunrise this morning from my lanai. Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk II, Olympus 8mm f/1.8 Pro fisheye. 1/2000 sec @ f/4.5, ISO 200. OOC jpeg. Natural profile, saturation +1, contrast -1. Nothing terribly special.

SOOC jpeg, cropped 16:9

Take a look at this approx 100% crop. Remember, this is a jpeg the camera gave me. Click through to see what's really going on in the shadows. Wow! Awful!!! Also, note the fuzziness in the pine needles in the sunshine on the right.

approx 100% crop from center of frame

I have always shot raw with the E-M1.2. This is the first time I've looked closely at a jpeg from that camera. Am I doing something wrong? What is Olympus doing here? Where is the fabled jpeg that Olympus supposedly creates? I really hope this disaster is of my own doing.
