To me that looks like a shutter issue, the shutter blinds aren't closing properly. Since it's a mechanical issue, if the camera has never had this problem before, it may have suffered a hard bump anytime between the moment you shipped it and when the buyer started using it.

It could also be a random failure, it happens, but the timing of it would be really odd!
