Android update question: 7 to 8

Question for Android experts, not photo-related, but I'm banging my head against the wall on how to do update my son's phone from Android 7.1.1 to 8 (Oreo), which would allow him to play Minecraft Earth. I have an Asus Zenfone 4 Max Pro (ZC554KL) running Android 7. I looked online and found the update file to Android 8 on the Asus support site. The zip file for oreo is downloaded onto the phone and in the "internal storage" folder. According to the online instructions, I was to re-start the phone, and the update icon should have appeared in the top corner. I have restarted the phone, have powered it off completely, then turned it back on, but nothing I do produces an update icon. I downloaded the file directly from Asus' site to the phone. I also connected it to my pc and dragged the file onto the phone. Still no icon.

I also extracted the zip file but of course that only showed me all of the files; there was no prompt that would indicate they were being installed as firmware. I tried the phone's update function as well but no fw updates were indicated.

I'm an Apple guy myself so I'm trying to get used to Android; it has better parental controls than apple's phones, but I'm not used to how all the updates work. I also don't know what "rooted" means, if that's important.

Any information on how I can get Oreo on the phone would be much appreciated. I have posted the question in an Asus forum, and so far one user has suggested downloading the update file to a micro sd, then insert that in the phone.
