Peak Design anchors ripped apart triangle split rings

Setup is:

  • Standard split rings (similar to those shown below)
  • Slightly heavier camera (Fujifilm GFX 50R with a 45mm)
  • Latest (thicker) version of the Peak anchors

I was on a long hike, camera was hanging from the strap, I found one of the triangle split rings had started to pull apart to the point where the camera almost fell off the strap.

I thought it was a fluke, a damaged split ring or maybe I'd previous caught it on something. (I temporarily replaced it with a round ring), but then found the other triangle split ring had begun to stretch apart a few days later.

What gives here? I bought the camera used from a reputable guy, did I end up with some bum third party split rings? Peak specifies triangle split rings for anchors, right? Do I need the ones with the plastic covers like these?
