X-T3 focus peaking question

Quick question: Focus peaking seems to be the best manual-focus aid for my purposes, and what I am noticing is that the zone of what is illuminated when focused does not change when I stop down to increase depth of field. In theory, this should be the case, but not in reality. Is there a way to make this happen, and if not, does anyone know if the illuminated zone represents wide-open depth of field, or something else? This would be a very useful feature if it changed as the aperture changed, but not so useful if it is just a general representation of focus.
