How much does hard data factor into how you choose gear?

I'm trying to move to an all native lens lineup and have been reading reviews etc... I'm finding that hard data is increasingly meaningless compared to just looking at pictures and photo tests. What does a 10% difference in MTF-50 scores mean for photography? I don't know. Either the lens renders nicely for what I plan to shoot with it or it doesn't.

Even in that mental switch I'm still finding that my previous knowledge biases me... for example I'm considering the Sony 24-70/4 and I find myself looking for decentering issues and soft corners. But to a degree it's not terrible. Probably no worse than my ancient Canon 24-85 for example... *if* I can find a good copy. Also trying not to pixel peep so much

Has anyone else tried to get off the spec racing treadmill?
