Flash against the ceiling

I wanna buy a flash for my EOS M5. There are two candidates, the Speedlite 470 EX-AI and the Speedlite EL-100. The 470 has a guide number of 47, the EL-100 has 26, but is much smaller and lighter. The 470's AI functionality won't work on my camera anyway, so it's not a concern. Price is almost the same, but the 470 is about as heavy as the camera itself.

So now comes my question: I am a newbie to flash photography, and I am thinking that I will mainly use it for indoor indirect lighting by flashing towards the ceiling.

How do I need to calculate such a scenario? I've heard that ceiling flash requires the guide number to be divided by 9. That would make the EL-100 almost unusable, and makes me think I need to buy the 470.

Is my thinking here correct, or am I misunderstanding something?
