G5Xii: How is the front ring as a zoom control?

I'm thinking of buying a G5Xii. But I've never gotten along with zoom levers, I would want a ring that's as close as possible to the mechanical zoom ring experience. So, how is the front ring around the lens as a zoom?

It's described as "clicky" or "stepped" which doesn't sound promising. But can anybody pass on some practical experience with it.

Is it continuously variable and precise? Or does the clicky side of it mean you can only do e.g. 16 steps without the in-between settings?

Is it linear, or is there acceleration?

Is it fiddly?

How does it compare to the ring on a RX100 (which I've borrowed to try), if you happen to know?

ANSWER:
Sony RX100
