Bright Model Dark Background

Hello.

I am experimenting with lighting setups and trying to emulate some images I saw online. The model is about 1-2 feet in front of dark background, either black painted wall or paper. The model is really bright and hard light is used it seems but the background is dark.

When I try I get tons and tons of spill on the background and it goes very gray.

I understand about flags but would like more education, not really practical to have 10 flags blocking it all out from reaching the background yet super bright on the model.

If anyone has advice or anything helpful would be great.

I can photoshop the image and have done so but think I am still missing a lot of photographic know-how, don't think that is the way to go, maybe final touches, but not a major reworking of the entire model/lighting/background things, seems it is bordering on compositing now.

Thanks everyone
