hello, I am considering a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens for my A6300, is the Sigma MC-11 adapter for Sony E-mount the right adapter?

if so, does the AF work, are there any drawbacks

thanks for any help

Sigma doesn't support the use of the MC-11 with lenses other than their own recent Global Vision lenses. Even with those lenses Sigma doesn't support all native AF features. They don't support continuous AF. They don't support the highest burst rates.

Most Non Global Vision EF lenses will function on the MC-11. EF-S lenses will not mount on the MC-11. The MC-11 emulates a Sony LA-EA1 with non-supported lenses. Continuous focus during bursts is limited to the "LO" frame rate either 2.5 or 3 FPS. There is also no...
I use the Sigma MC-11 adaptor with my Canon EF lenses and my Sigma EF mount 60-600mm Sport on my Sony A7R IV with no problems. Sigma issues firmware updates to the MC-11 to keep it up to date with the features of a great many EF mount lenses. When you attach an EF mount lens to the MC-11 and a Sony camera, the MC-11 will flash either green, yellow or red to let you know if the firmware is up to date, needs to be updated or if the MC-11 is incompatible. While I don't have the A6300, I would think it works the same way.

EDIT: I use the original Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro on my A7R IV with great results. See here .

There is also no continuous video AF. That macro lens will be labeled "DT 100mm F2.8 SAM" in the EXIF data. There will be no Lens Compensation in camera, and lens profile has to be applied manually in a raw developer.

The Minolta AF 100mm F2.8 D and Sony A 100mm F2.8 Macros have Lens Compensation in camera, but require the Sony LA-EA4 adapter for AF. These are also limited to the "LO" frame rate for AF-C during bursts. The EXIF data is correct for these so lens profiles will be automatically applied in raw developers.

These and the Canon have focus distance encoders which allows x- and y-axis stabilization which is important at high magnification. There are third-party E-mount macro lenses without distance encoders. Also any non-electronic lens or adapter.

Other EF adapters can emulate a native lens instead of just LA-EA emulation. Sigma only does this with their supported Gobal Vision lenses on the MC-11. Native emulation often does not work well, but it also lacks the LA-EA burst and video AF limitations.

thank you for the response, your images are wonderful, very well done

after reading your response and giving it some thought, I'm setting my sights on a macro lens that doesn't require an adapter, thank you for your response, mot helpful

Thanks for the comment on my images. Just to let you know, they were taken with my original EF 100 Macro, not the EF 100 Macro L you are interested in. Some of my equipment is for professional work, not for the images I post on my website or on these forums. So I just mounted my EF 100 Macro L on my A7R IV for the first time to make sure it works. CAF worked, though a little slow and it was very noisy with the USM, but, just like on my other Canon and Sigma EF mount lenses, works. The following distance was from 16 feet right up to MFD and all images were in focus. Sigma's website does say that it does not support CAF on the lenses I use. It is the only feature they are currently cautioning about for them. Yet I use my Canon and Sigma EF mount lenses interchangeably with my native Sony mount lenses on the A7R IV, my only Sony still image camera. Note that this would not have been the case if I didn't update the MC-11 to the latest firmware. Before that update, none of the lenses worked very well. Afterwards, I've had no real problems. I can now even do birds in flight.

Now I see you selected another poster's reply as the accepted answer and I believe your decision to go native is the best one. There may be more that Sigma can do with the MC-11 firmware and Global Vision Lens firmware so that they can take away the CAF warning on their site.
