Noob question - how to get both faces in focus during self-portraits?

I'm a Sony APS-C shooter but I recently picked up a used M100 and a 22mm f/2 for a number of reasons and I'm very satisfied so far.

I have a little problem with self-portraits (groan if you will, but the flip up screen and compact 22mm lens was more or less made for this IMO) and I can't seem to get the camera to detect both faces like it would on my Sony.

+ Tracking couldn't track both faces.

Smooth zone AF is too small to focus in on both of our faces, even when mounted on a mini tripod.

1-point AF is too small of a focus area for both faces.

I'm confident I'm doing something wrong, but I just don't know what.

I was able to take some self-portraits recently in a trip, and on the pictures we managed to get in focus, they were amazing.
