That confused me too but I'm pretty sure it is a CCD. Canon uses "HS " in their point and shoot cameras with the BSI CMOS sensor. I also have the ELPH 360 HS, it may have a bit less noise speckle to the images but I can't say the quality is that much better.

I always think the colour in CCD images just has a special look about it which appeals to me but difficult to quantify and many do not agree. The image looks great full screen on my 60cm monitor and nobody can argue with the bang for bucks you are getting with this little camera.

I shoot these cameras at a lower resolution mode as I don't really need full res and IQ isn't that great with these sensors. The 12mp 1/2.3" BSI sensor was nice in its day. All went downhill with the 14mp sensors on up.

I'd prefer if they gave up the long zoom for 24-90mm equiv. and a bit faster aperture, say f/2.5-4.5. A modern version of the 12mp BSI sensor would be nice too. But no, they play the numbers game with 20mp sensors and long zooms. The smart phone cameras leave these things in the dust as far as IQ goes.

They probably just have to play nowadays with what they can get from Sony.
