Depends on the housing. Meikon/SeaFrogs has a housing that fits RX100 models I through V, and another that fits models III through VII. The latter has interchangeable ports and a vacuum system.

by drop in, I mean "behaves similarly."   The G7x II and III play to pretty much the same strengths.   The 7 versus the 5 have different points.   Similarly, Panasonics GHn series focused on video over stills.   The Oympus OM1 series was the other way.

With Sony, every generation is a new set of optimizations.  In most regards, they're just throwing spegheti at the wall and seeing what sticks.
