Tripod with RX100?

Tonight I finally had a chance to break out the RX100 and tripod again for a more detailed evaluation of the issue.

It looks like these rubber pads are the culprit. Great for securing a larger camera, they dig into the control wheel on the RX100M3.

As soon as I turn the key to the loosest amount that does not wiggle when the wheel starts to rub on the pad.

Temporary (permanent?) solution is to use a travel tripod that my parents carried around in the 70s.  It wiggles a very small amount in landscape mode due to the mechanism for switching to portrait orientation but is free a(as in beer) and without obstruction.  I'm going to practice with this tool and see how it works out.
