And pro-level gear does raise the stakes for certain people.

Yup.  Also distance makes a difference.  If you are a ways off, so the booth is just one element in the scene the artist is not likely to object.  Move in for a closeup of a single piece and you will have his full attention.

And simply selling prints is not his only concern.  If his work is truly unique he may worry that you are scouting for a competing artist.  Who wants to fabricate knock-offs.

I shoot these fairs often.  And I always ask permission first.  Always.
