Photoshop CC 20.0.6 selecting and masks.

When I apply an adjustment layer, for example curves the mask is white.  Now I decide that I want to apply a mask from the red channel.  So I control click the red channel and I have a selection.  How do I apply that to the  curves mask that is already there.  I know  I can make a selection and then make an adjustment layer and the mask will be applied.  I don't always know if I want a mask.  I know there is a way to do this I just can't find it.  Arrrrg.  I thought it was "apply image" but that doesn't work.  My work around has been to control click the red channel, add adjustment layer then alt drag the selection to my original white mask then delete the sacrificial adjustment layer.  Long way around something this simple.  Thanks!!
