Top of camera dials

I am quite disappointed that many new cameras have several dials on top of the camera, instead of having them inside the camera, like below (the dial below the shutter release button):

Not only the dial saves button space on top of the camera, but it is also a pushable dial, meaning for example that by pushing the dial you can toggle between aperture control and exposure compensation (when in Aperture control mode).

On the same G1 camera, the knob on the right on the picture (left from the photographer) is an example of wasted space (also mentioned in the DPReview review).

Of course, in many cases there is no extra room inside the camera.

Also, a lot of knobs on top of the camera make the look "more professional", but for me functionality is much much more important.

Do you agree?

Are there factors that I have not mentioned or thought of?
