If your only concerns are convenience and speed of use, the smartphone will win hands-down.

Exactly what "gets the shot" whilst I'm fumbling to change settings on the DSLR

I can't recall the last time I fumbled to change settings on a dslr, but whenever I try to use my daughters iPhone to take a. pic it is a slow process, for her too for that matter
:o

Then you must have pleeeeennnnttttttttttyyy of time when taking your shots. My very cheap smartphone automatically switches to multishot when keeping the shutter depressed.

Nope. Not necessary to have lots of time. I use the CL mode on my x-T2 and am perfectly capable of utilizing the various assignable function buttons to things that I want/need/like to change. I process in RAW when I don’t need to use the jpg for a quick image distribution and use Bridge to determine which captures have the best focus and/or exposure. No time drain for me.
