Exactly what "gets the shot" whilst I'm fumbling to change settings on the DSLR

I can't recall the last time I fumbled to change settings on a dslr, but whenever I try to use my daughters iPhone to take a. pic it is a slow process, for her too for that matter

Then you must have pleeeeennnnttttttttttyyy of time when taking your shots. My very cheap smartphone automatically switches to multishot when keeping the shutter depressed.

it's all about being aware and prepared, actually I try to see shots coming, to watch the potential, I try to be smooth, not sudden, in fact most shots give you plenty of time, and I much prefer one or two shots, three at most to scattershot, I still have to edit them after all!
what I already like about  a camera is that it is very familiar, but it still weighs a lot more than a little phone :o
