Is Photography Bad For the Environment?

Think of how much gear you buy and then throw away when it gets obselete. Same with smartphones. None of these electronics are recyclable despite what people may think. All I've ever seen of "recycled" electronic waste is that they get sent to India or China where they get soaked in toxic acids to leech the gold out. All the rest of the toxic chemicals, silicone, plastic, lead, etc gets dumped.

What is the carbon and toxic waste footprint of all our gear and photography lust? Is it really worth it with millions of throw away cameras and lenses being produced every year in addition to the billion phones that get thrown away every year?
