Sony A9/200-600 vs. Canon 7D2/100-400V2

I did the following tests to compare the sharpness of my A9 with the new 200-600 lens vs my 7D2 with 100-400L V2. The 7D2 has an APS-C sensor with a 1.6 crop factor.

The following is the test subject setup.

Test subject setup: focus at the doll's face.

I have my A9/200-600 and 7D2/100-400 side by side on tripods. AF-S was used, and the face was the focus point. The following is 100% crop on the doll's clothe.

From left to right: A9 F6.3, A9 F9, 7D2 F5.6, and 7D2 F8

My observation is that 7D2 at F.6 is sharper than A9 at F6.3. When A9 is at F9, it is sharper than 7D2 at F5.6. When 7D2 was set at F8, the image was less sharp than F5.6, probably due to focus shift.

The following 100% cut is from away the center.

From top to bottom: A9 at F6.3, A9 at F9, 7D2 at F5.6, and 7D2 at F8.

Similar results were observed.
