I do understand you very well. The Pana-Leica 100-400  is indeed excellent choice (fortunetly now we have very good time for those who likes the photography and photo-gear).

Personally, I do not like any equivalence references including quite reasonable FOV-equivalence. The 400mm lens is 400 mm lens, it can never be 800mm. Also the FOV is defined by cropping we usually apply. I prefer, and I beleave that soon everybody will be capable to think not in terms of the equivalence, but in terms of quantity and quality of  information we can get from a sensor with a proper lens.
