Ever more extended viewfinders

It seems like every new model and generation of mirrorless camera has a viewfinder that sticks further and further out from the back of the camera. It's to the point now where it has become uncomfortable for me around my eye socket because when I press the camera up to my face the only pressure point is my eye. When I pick up my old film cameras or pretty much any DSLR the viewfinder is more or less flush with the back of the camera and I find it much more comfortable.

Is this mostly for video or what?

Or is there some other advantage?

For people wearing glasses?

To keep your nose or cheek from touching the touch screen?
