Lens focus speed – a surprising statement

In 2009 Photozone.de tested the “new” Panasonic 20mm f. 1.7 lens.

The lens was reviewed on Panasonic GF1 (a 12MP camera)

About focusing they wrote: “ The AF speed is very high and typical for all contrast AF systems the accuracy is spot on.”

It is difficult in 2019 to find people agreeing about the focus speed statement. The lens is by some posters bashed with horrible slow focusing.

I use the lens on my Panasonics G80 and GX80 and I have many newer lenses with faster focusing, but at least on my Pana cameras the lens focuses pretty fast in most conditions even by 2019 standards. The lens can only AFS – not AFF and AFC.

Considering it is a real pancake lens released 10 years ago its sharpness is pretty amazing.

How could a vacuum cleaner company design such a good lens?

(I know they use a lot of software corrections, but otherwise I wouldn’t be a pancake.)
