Upgrade from a 70-300 f/4.5-5.6g?

I currently have the previous version 70-300mm (FX 70-300g VR). I mostly use it for wildlife when I'm traveling/hiking. I've been thinking about stepping up to something better for a while but haven't done so.

It's paired with my Z6, so I'm reluctant to make any big upgrade to an F-Mount lens -- the future 100-400 S might be a great long term upgrade choice for me -- depending on how it turns out, how much it ends up costing, and how heavy it is, but I was thinking about something for the short-term. All that said, are there any not too expensive upgrades that would be worthwhile? I was thinking about the 70-300 AF-P, but I don't know if it's worth the $400-$450 step up cost, and I don't think I'd be too interested in investing much more than that into an F lens.
