On the fifth page of a 2006 Foveon paper by Turner/Guttosch there is an interesting (to some) diagram. It shows a group of four Foveon pixels where the green layer is used as luminance at full resolution - but the top, middle and bottom layers are binned 2x2 and used as "chroma", i.e. sub-sampled at 1/4 resolution. Said chroma is therefore processed more speedily and then transformed into CbCr (like in video or a 4:2:0 JPEG).

"Figure 12: Split image pipeline data concept. Chroma data used for color processing is ¼ resolution compared to the panchromatic sharpness data."

Not too hard to see a slight resemblance to the Quattro, eh?
