Item stolen from hotel reception after delivery - who's liable?

I went into a camera store in Melbourne to buy a flash (which cost $200 AUD), but they didn't have it in stock so they offered to have it delivered to my hotel in Queensland as I was due to travel there the next day.

The item was sent via AusPost, and the tracking confirms it arrived at the hotel and was signed for by a member of hotel staff.

However, the reception staff at the hotel cannot now find the package, and the assistant manager was of no help when I asked what would happen now. She told me that they would ask for photo ID when they hand parcels to guests, but they keep no records of what has been handed out.

I'm not sure who is liable for this loss, as it seems most likely to me that a member of the hotel staff has stolen the package. Anyone been in a similar situation?
