"Needed" ...well for me yes in the sense that I need fast lenses (1.2 to 1.8 depending on the focal length in order to get me the look I want for my work that I present to my clients. Not just 1.4 but smooth bokeh as well as not all lenses are designed equally.
1.4 or fast long lenses are even more crucial for my work when doing full body shots where i can still get that subject isolation I like while doing a more environmental portrait.

+1. I shoot wide open most of the time, and I invest in the fastest, best lenses I can buy. I want to be able to get that surreal look that only super fast lenses offer, even if it is just a marginal increase over standard primes.

My A9 + Sigma 35 f1.2 is gives me a look, and a level of AF confidence that I have never experienced before.
